Accessing HathiTrust eBooks

CSU LIBRARY IS NOT A PARTNER INSTITUTION WITH HATHITRUST

  • Full text access for non-partner institutions is limited to books that are in the public domain or that have a Creative Commons license, but everyone may search the full text of all materials in HathiTrust
  • To limit your search to the approximately 30% of the HathiTrust collection which is in the public domain, check the Full view only box on the search screen
  • Anyone can sign up for a Friend Account to save personal collections of materials

DOWNLOAD OR EMAIL IN PDF FORMAT FOR OFFLINE USE

  • Active Internet connection and web browser is required to download the PDF but not to read it later
  • Available for most computers, laptops, or mobile devices able to read PDFs
  • No special ereader app required; use the PDF reader of your choice, such as Adobe Reader, iBooks, etc.
  • Can download single-page PDFs of all public domain works, full-PDFs of public domain works that are not subject to third-party agreements, and full-PDFs of works made available under Creative Commons licenses
  • Note: if full download is not available from HathiTrust, search Discover by title for another source that may offer full downloading, especially for government publications
  • On Apple devices, after downloading PDF, click Open in iBooks or another PDF reader app
  • Can download to a computer, connect your ereader to the computer, and then copy the PDFs to the ereader
  • Can keep PDFs indefinitely
